Vibrator Guide

What is a Vibrator?

A vibrator or vibe is a battery or electric powered device used for sexual pleasure. The traditional vibrator is a slim, smooth cylinder, usually made of plastic, powered by batteries in the base of the vibe. There are also dual-action, which consist of a shaft that may rotate in different directions, vibrate, have gyrating beads or balls, be textured or all of the above. They also have a clitoral stimulator attached at the base of the shaft which may be any variety of shape, rabbits, butterflies and dolphins being popular. Most have separate controls for each action. There are wearable vibrators that have straps to keep them in place. There are also vibrating bullets, G-Spot vibrators and anal vibrators. Vibrators are made from a wide variety of materials, colors and size.

How to Choose a Vibrator

It can be overwhelming to select a vibrator. Here are some things to consider:

1. What do you want this toy to do for you (or your partner)?

  • If this is your first vibrator consider starting out with something small, soft and gentle.
  • Are you looking for something to provide internal stimulation for the G-Spot? Then consider a toy with a curve. The G-Spot is located about one and a half to two inches inside the front vaginal wall. Use the curve pointing toward the front (belly button) of the woman's body.
  • A dual-action vibrator is ideal if you are looking for external clitoral as well as internal stimulation?
  • Do you have difficulty achieving orgasm or need something more powerful? If so, look to the multi-function vibe or bullet for intense direct stimulation.
  • Do you want something you control with your hand, or do you want your hands free for exploration?

2. What do you want your toy to feel like?

  • Do you want something that feels realistic to the touch? Then you definitely want something made of silicone, Cyberskin, or Virtual Touch; these materials are pricier than plastic, jelly or rubber, but feel very realistic.
  • Do you want something soft that feels realistic, but is more affordable? Most vibrators made of jelly or rubber will warm to your body temperature.
  • Would you prefer a toy that you can use in the water? Then a vibe that is waterproof is the best choice for you.

3. What size do you prefer? Small, medium or super-sized?

  • Are you just beginning to experiment with toys? Then you may want to start with a smaller vibe.
  • Do you want something average that won't likely be intimidating to bring into your relationship? Look at the dimensions of the vibrator. Typically there will be information about the length and girth. If a toy is uncomfortable or too small to please, then you'll be frustrated and unhappy.
  • Is a feeling of fullness most gratifying to you? Again, make sure to look at the dimensions so you're not surprised.

Make Sure You Have All Your Accessories:

After you have selected your vibrator, make sure you have the following:

  • Plenty of fresh batteries in the proper size for your toy. The description and the box your vibe comes in should say what size is needed.
  • Lubricant! There are many different types and a variety of prices. Read about the importance of using a quality lubricant here!
  • Toy cleaner. Care for your toy and keep it clean. Using a toy cleaner will prolong the life of your toy, keep it clean and preserve the material.
