Lubricant Guide

What is a Lubricant?

A water or silicone-based formula used to make masturbation or intercourse more pleasurable by enhancing the sensations and providing a slippery feel. Ingredients and prices vary, but water-based lubes are the most widely used as they are appropriate for most sex toys (they won't cause damage to pricey silicone and realistic) and are safe to use with condoms. Silicone-based lubes are generally for use in water, but are also popular with couples because they don't get sticky or dry out, reducing or eliminating the need for reapplication. Lubricant comes in many forms: liquid, gel and creams. Thicker lubes are often used for anal play and sometimes include a desensitizer.

How to Select a Lubricant

Here are three questions to take the guess work out of choosing a lube!

1. What do you want this lube to do?

  • Are you looking for a lubricant that feels as natural as possible? Then a water-based lube may be more to your liking. Affordable and available in a wide selection, you can experiment with different lubes without spending a lot of money.
  • Do you want something that won’t get sticky or dry out? A silicone-based lube is ideal because it doesn't absorb into the skin. It's also perfect for use in the water and with waterproof toys!
  • Will you be using this lube for anal play? You'll probably want a thicker lubricant, possibly with a desensitizer in the formula.

2. What characteristics do you want in your lubricant?

  • Try a flavored lube if you are looking to make oral play even more pleasant.
  • Try a lube that warms or that includes different ingredients such as ginseng, L-Arginine or even yohimbe to kick it up a notch. Some people feel heightened sensations with these all-natural ingredients!
  • Be sure to read the description to ensure the lube is condom-safe if you will be using it with condoms. Oil-based products are never safe to use with condoms.

3. Does size matter?

  • Would you like something to keep handy in the bedroom? Then you would probably prefer a larger size container that is easy to dispense from.
  • Do you prefer something that you can throw into your purse or overnight bag? Two ounces or less is perfect for on the go.
  • Are you interested in having a variety of lubes to try? Most lubricants come in various sizes, making it easy to try several. It's fun to mix and match!

  • Concerned about reactions or irritation? If you experience discomfort after applying a lubricant, wash it off immediately. You might try a few before you find one that works well for you!
